Why Lionel Messi is more important to Barcelona than Cristiano Ronaldo is to Real Madrid

These Barca and Real stats give a whole new angle on football's biggest debate: Ronaldo or Messi?

So who IS the best? We think we might finally have an answer…
If you're a football fan, you HAVE to have an opinion: is it Lionel Messi or Cristiano Ronaldo ?
Every time El Clasico approaches, the ultimate footballing debate gets reignited - who is the best player in the world? We all know it's one of them, but no-one has ever been able to split these two modern-day legends; to definitively prove whetherBarcelona's No10 or Real Madrid's No7 is the best footballer on Planet Earth.
Until now.
With the latest installment of the epic Real Madrid v Barcelona rivalry at the Bernabeu this weekend, everyone knows Ronaldo and Messi are the key players on each side. But who does more for their respective team?
To find out, we looked at every Barcelona and Real Madrid goal scored in La Liga since the start of the 2009/10 season. For the record, Real have scored 676 goals in that time; Barca have 657.
The two superstars have scored more than a third of those, which is a pretty remarkable fact in itself. Their individual totals over the last five and a bit seasons are remarkably similar (Messi 235, Ronaldo 233).
But when you see what percentage of their team's total goals that amounts to, Messi's contribution has been proportionally bigger:

Percentage of team's goals

Ronaldo

Cristiano Ronaldo of Real Madrid celebrates after scoring his team's second goal
34.5 %

Messi

Lionel Messi celebrates his goal against Atletico Madrid
35.8 %
Since August 2009, La Liga only
It's not just goals, either. When you look at the two teams' total assists over the same period, the difference is considerably bigger.
Messi has racked up 87 assists in that time; Ronaldo has 67. Just look at how that equates to a percentage of the team totals:

Percentage of team's assists

Ronaldo

Cristiano Ronaldo of Real Madrid celebrates after scoring his team's second goal
13.3 %

Messi

Lionel Messi celebrates his goal against Atletico Madrid
18.2 %
Since August 2009, La Liga only

So, there you have it. Conclusive proof that Messi has been more important to Barcelona than Ronaldo has been to Real Madrid.

But does that mean he can finally be considered the better player? We'll let you decide in the poll below…
